G. Brent Mickum, Esq.
Litigation Director
Complex Civil Litigation and High-Stakes Trial Practice
G. Brent Mickum, Esq. is a nationally respected trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor who brings over three decades of high-level litigation experience spanning private practice, government service, and corporate counsel leadership. As Litigation Director at Fox & Moghul, Mr. Mickum oversees the firm’s complex civil litigation portfolio, ensuring excellence in trial advocacy, discovery strategy, and case management across all practice areas.
Mr. Mickum’s career reflects a rare breadth of experience across all dimensions of litigation. He has served as Senior Investigative Counsel for the U.S. Senate, an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission, and completed a three-year detail with the U.S. Department of Justice as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, where he prosecuted complex criminal cases. In private practice, he was a partner at two national law firms—Hollingsworth LLP (formerly Spriggs & Hollingsworth) and Keller & Heckman LLP— where he handled high-value product liability, regulatory, and commercial cases for Fortune 500 clients, including Novartis (pharmaceutical litigation) and Mars, Inc. (advertising litigation).
As General Counsel for Mission Coal LLC, Mr. Mickum managed a litigation portfolio exceeding $1 billion in assessed liabilities, coordinating national defense efforts with elite outside counsel, including White & Case, Bradley Arant, Gibbons, and Steptoe & Johnson. His exceptional leadership in managing complex, multi-jurisdictional litigation has earned him a reputation as a strategist of the highest order.
Mr. Mickum has also been recognized for his commitment to human rights and constitutional law. He represented several Guantánamo Bay detainees on a pro bono basis, working with the Center for Constitutional Rights in groundbreaking litigation against the U.S. government, DOD, and CIA—efforts that contributed to the repatriation of several detainees. His advocacy in this area earned national attention, as well as multiple awards, including the National Legal Aid & Defender Association’s Beacon of Justice Award and the Southern Center for Human Rights’ Frederick Douglass Human Rights Award.
An accomplished educator and thought leader, Mr. Mickum has taught trial advocacy and deposition practice for more than 25 years at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) programs hosted by Georgetown University Law Center. He has published and lectured widely, including articles in The Washington Post, The Guardian, and The Review of Litigation. His seminal law review article, Guise, Contrivance, or Artful Dodging: The Discovery Rules Governing Testifying Employee Experts, remains a frequently cited work in litigation practice.
